ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • This position will work as a generalist in multiple Environmental Health Programs
  • Conducts soil and site evaluations for the permitting of septic systems and private drinking water wells
  • Conduct state mandated inspections and issue permits for retail food establishments, lodging establishments, public swimming pools and spas, tattoo artists, institutions and childcare facilities
  • Promote and protect public health through education, inspection, surveillance and enforcement related to North Carolina Public Health Laws and Rules
  • Investigation of complaints, reports of foodborne and other communicable illnesses related to establishments as mandated and evaluation of water quality standards
  • Childhood lead investigations and reporting
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Director

 

Must have ability to work well with the public, have a good understanding of environmental health rules and regulations, have good oral and written communication skills and have basic computer skills.  Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Driver’s License OR the ability to obtain a North Carolina Driver's License within 30 days of employment (if selected for hire). 

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  Graduation from a four-year college or university with 30 semester hours of course work in the physical or biological sciences and two (2) years of exposure in Environmental Health; or a four (4) year or Master’s degree in Environmental Health from a program which is accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one (1) year of experience in Environmental Health.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:  Registered as an Environmental Health Specialist by the N.C. State Board of Environmental Health Specialist Examiners.  Applicants meeting minimum education requirements without being registered may be considered for an intern position.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  Monday – Friday / 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

 

HIRING RANGE: Negotiable based experience

Salary ($25,659)     Part Time with benefits

Minimum Education and Experience

Must have bachelor's degree or higher in social work.  Preferred Case Management experience.

 

Major Responsibilities include:  Care coordination for children ages 0 - 5 . Serves on Child Fatality Protection Team and other committees and coalitions as appropriate.

Occupational Therapist

This PRN position pays $45.00/hour.  It is a PRN position with no benefits and will not exceed 19 hours per week.  Open until filled.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS:

Employees who work at least 20 hours a week receive the following benefits. Benefits may be pro-rated for employees who work between 20 and 40 hours a week.

 

Leave:

  Holidays 11-12 per year (based on state holidays)

  Annual Leave 0-2 Years = 6.64 Hrs/Month (10 d/yr)

     2-5 Years = 8.00 Hrs/Month (12 d/yr)

     5-10 Years = 10.00 Hrs/Month (15 d/yr)

     10-15 Years = 12.00 Hrs/Month (18 d/yr)

     15-20 Years = 14.00 Hrs/Month (21 d/yr)

     20 Year And Up = 16.00 Hrs/Month (24 d/yr)

  Sick Leave All full time employees 8.00 Hrs/Month

  Petty Leave All full time employees 22.00 Hrs/Year

 

Insurance:

Health Insurance: County pays employee’s health insurance premiums (family coverage is extra). Health insurance coverage starts 30-60 days after hire depending on hire date.

 

Other Insurance: Various AFLAC, vision and dental policies paid for by employee are available.

 

Retirement:

State Retirement System: Approximately 6% of salary is deducted from salary and county adds about an additional 6% (vested after 5 years). The actual percentages paid by the employee and county is determined by the state retirement system each year.

 

401k Plan: Is available but the county does not provide any match

 

Longevity Bonus:

0-4 Years = 0% of current salary

5-9 Years = 1% of current salary

10-14 Years = 2% of current salary

15-19 Years = 3% of current salary

20 Years – Retirement = 4% of current salary

 

Mileage Reimbursement Rate:

IRS Rate (Reimbursed montly)

 

Pay Check Distribution:

Monthly

 

Hours Of Operation:

8:00-5:00 M-F with an hour for lunch (Some staff work alternate hours)

 

Probation:

9 mo for pay increase / 2 yr for "career status"
